Universal Radio has announced that they are taking orders for the new Grundig S450DLX–an obvious replacement/improvement on the Eton/Grundig S350DL.

I have used an S350DL extensively and find that its audio is exceptional. It is a very capable short and medium-wave receiver. Based on Universal’s description, it appears the S450DL has many improvements including:

  • An AM IF Output jack (F type) which could be used to decode DRM or SSB (similar to C.Crane Radio SW)
  • 50 Memory Presets (10 per band)
  • Dual-conversion superheterodyne circuit design
  • Uses 6 D cell batteries (guess this new radio needs more juice!)

The S450DLX could be a great radio and may even give my favorite large portable–the C.Crane Radio SW–a run for its money.

The Grundig S450DLX Field Radio offers exceptional value and superior reception of AM, FM and international shortwave. Utilizing dual-conversion superheterodyne circuit design, it's powered by six D cells (not included) for exceptionally long play-time. It receives all shortwave frequencies, continuous from 1.7 to 30 MHz, covering all 13 international shortwave broadcast bands of 11, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 31, 41, 49, 60, 75 and 90 meters. You will get news and events from all over the world and superior reception of your favorite domestic AM and FM stations, including those often hard to pull-in AM talk shows. It's ideal for the AM DXing enthusiast too. There is a built-in sleep timer that automatically turns the radio off after 90, 60, 45, 30, 15, 10, 5 or 1 minutes so if you fall asleep the radio will not play all night long and run down the battery. A wide and narrow bandwidth switch allows you to narrow the radio's bandwidth to reduce adjacent channel interference.

The main tuning knob may be set to fast tuning, slow tuning or lock. A new Quick Tune button allows you to quickly tune across the selected band. Independent Bass and Treble tone controls are featured. The medium wave [AM] step may be selected at 9 or 10 kHz via a switch in the battery compartment. Other features include RF Gain, 50 memories (10 per band), 12/24 hour clock, dual alarms, battery level icon, and selection of mono or stereo FM (stereo FM to earphone jack only). The rear panel has an F type antenna jack for external SW/FM antenna and there is a spring loaded terminal for MW antenna and Ground. Additionally there is an AM IF Output jack (F type). This is available for possible future accessory devices such as DRM or SSB decoders.

There is a built in telescopic antenna for FM and shortwave plus a built in ferrite bar antenna for medium wave [AM]. The right side of the radio has jacks for line level output and line level input, plus a conventional earphone jack. There are also slide switches for DX/Local antenna, External/Internal antenna. There is also a switch for key light on-off. With the key light feature turned on, the push button keys on the front panel will be back illuminated. Very cool for nighttime operation! With comfortable carry handle. Includes 9VDC AC adapter which plugs into the left side of the radio. Also operates from six D cells (not supplied). 12.2 x 8.5 x 3.8 inches.
